About the Workshop

10:00-4:00 with a break for lunch
During this 2 day workshop Jo Davies will guide you through the first important steps towards throwing with porcelain. This course is for people who may or may not have worked with porcelain before but are curious about how to work with it. During this class you will gain an insight into the beautiful qualities of porcelain, how to make a start at harnessing them, but also how to mitigate the problems that can come up when using this material. Jo will encourage you to approach porcelain with an open, curious mind in order to put aside anything you might have heard regarding its temperamental reputation. We will discuss how to harness the best qualities of porcelain through some simple exercises in throwing and turning, beginning with small cylinders, to bowls to bottle shapes. On the second day you will be able to trim your pots in order to gain an understanding of the importance of trimming when working with porcelain.
About Jo
Jo Davies is a ceramicist specialising in wheel-throwing porcelain. Her practice includes hand-making a fine porcelain design range, lighting and unique objects. Her individual approach to wheel-thrown ceramics, where high-fired porcelain often appears paradoxically to be fresh off the wheel, balances softness with rigidity, smoothness with weight and tactility. As a Royal College of Art MA graduate, she exhibits internationally and has worked with, amongst others, the National Portrait Gallery, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, the Hepworth Wakefield, Somerset House, Heals and the National Trust. Her work is held at the Contemporary Ceramics Centre in Bloomsbury, alongside other stockists, and the Cheongju International Craft Competition holds her work in their permanent collection. She has also led the designs for ceramics collections for Mulberry and Union Coffee, as well as having written the book ‘Electric Kilns for Ceramics’ published by the Crowood Press.
