About the Workshop

Saturday 19th September
10:00-4:00 with a break for lunch

This masterclass will concentrate on techniques for creating thin porcelain slabs and joining them to form vessels. Justine will demonstrate her methods and a variety of techniques that can be used to achieve diverse results.
During the workshop, you will design and create vessels from your own templates, and will learn how to add pattern and texture to your creations. Justine will explain the use of underglazes and simple clear glazing that she uses in her own work.
You will finish the workshop with a greater understanding of hand building with porcelain and will have pieces ready for firing at bisque. You will be able to discuss your work throughout the course and will receive plenty of individual attention and support throughout.

About Justine

Since Leaving Camberwell College of Art in 1998, Justine has been primarily working with handbuilt porcelain. Her work addresses the boundaries between function and decoration. Form is paramount; function is a driving motivation, but it is the aesthetics of a piece that are key to her making.

Justine’s work is very much concerned with the simplicity and beauty of the clay and incorporating pattern and texture as well as glaze to create subtle, unique variations. Thinness and movement are very important in each piece.

Justine grew up, worked and lived in a busy part of London; her work reflected that, as she drew inspiration from city life. Justine has now lived and worked in rural Wales since 2003 and encounters a different range of stimuli with exciting new chapters of exploration opening daily.
