About the Workshop
This one-day workshop offers a holistic and accessible introduction to glaze chemistry, theory, and development, designed to demystify glaze practice for beginners and those new to glaze. Starting with the basics and building step by step, the course explores the essential principles of glazes, the materials used, and different firing temperatures. Participants will learn the fundamentals of glaze-making, including weighing, mixing, and developing simple glaze profiles, while gaining an understanding of key components such as flux, silica, and alumina.
Through hands-on experimentation using provided test tiles and materials, the course aims to be informative, practical, and confidence-building, offering a solid foundation for anyone wishing to develop their understanding of glazes.
About Louisa
Louisa Taylor gained a BA (hons) degree in Ceramics, at Bath Spa University, followed by a master’s degree from the Royal College of Art, London. Examples of her work are held in private and public collections in the UK, and she has received numerous design awards and accolades. Alongside her practice, Louisa lectures on ceramics for the BA (Hons) 3D Design and Craft degree course at the University of Brighton and is the author of three books: Ceramics Bible, Ceramics Masterclass and Glazes for the Contemporary Maker. She is based in Brighton, UK.
